Question 1

What is the difference between Lower, Middle and Upper berth?

Accepted Answer

Lower Berth (LB) is the bottom berth and doubles as the daytime seat, which makes it the easiest to get in and out of. Middle Berth (MB) folds down from the wall and can only be opened at night. Upper Berth (UB) is the top berth: it stays made up all day and is the most private, but you have to climb to it.

Question 2

How are seat numbers assigned in Indian Railways?

Accepted Answer

In Sleeper and AC 3 Tier, every bay holds 8 berths and the pattern repeats: Lower, Middle, Upper, Lower, Middle, Upper, Side Lower, Side Upper. So berths 1-8 are bay 1, 9-16 bay 2, and so on. AC 2 Tier uses bays of 6 with no middle berth, and chair cars are numbered row by row.

Question 3

Which berth is best for senior citizens?

Accepted Answer

A Lower Berth. Indian Railways runs a lower-berth quota for passengers aged 60 and above, and you can set Lower Berth as your preference when booking. It needs no climbing and can be used as a seat during the day.

Question 4

What is Side Lower and Side Upper?

Accepted Answer

Side Lower (SL) and Side Upper (SU) run along the corridor side of the coach, at right angles to the main bay berths. They are narrower and shorter than main berths and sit next to the aisle, so they see more foot traffic. Side Lower converts into two seats during the day.

Question 5

How many berths are in a Sleeper coach?

Accepted Answer

A standard Sleeper coach has 72 berths, arranged as 9 bays of 8. Each bay has 6 main berths and 2 side berths. AC 3 Tier also has 72, AC 2 Tier has 48, and AC First Class has 24 berths in 12 cabins.

Question 6

What does RAC mean for berths?

Accepted Answer

RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) means you may board with a seat rather than a full berth. RAC passengers are usually put on a Side Lower, shared between two of them. If berths free up before or after the chart, RAC can be upgraded to a confirmed berth.
