Navigating the waitlist (WL) on Indian Railways can be a challenge, especially during peak seasons or on popular routes. Many travelers book tickets from a train's originating station, only to find themselves stuck on a long waitlist. What if there was a legitimate strategy to improve your chances of confirmation without cancelling and rebooking? Enter the smart tactic of changing your boarding station.
This comprehensive guide from RailTC will explain when and how changing your boarding point can significantly boost your ticket confirmation probability, leveraging the intricate quota allocation system of Indian Railways. We'll also show you how RailTC's tools can help you make the most informed decision.
Indian Railways operates with various quotas for different stations along a train's route. While a train might originate from a major city like New Delhi (NDLS) or Mumbai CSMT (CSTM), it allocates a specific number of seats to intermediate stations under the Remote Location Quota (RLWL) or Pooled Quota. This means:
By strategically changing your boarding station to one of these intermediate points, you effectively move your PNR into a different waitlist queue, potentially one with fewer bookings and a higher confirmation probability. It's not about jumping the queue, but about finding a less crowded queue.
Indian Railways allows passengers to change their boarding station once per PNR. This change must be made:
Once the chart is prepared, no changes to the boarding station are permitted. This makes timely decision-making crucial.
The process is straightforward and can be done online via the IRCTC website:
Important: You cannot change the boarding station for Tatkal tickets booked online. For offline bookings or Tatkal tickets, you might need to visit a PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counter.
This is where smart planning comes into play. Simply picking a random intermediate station won't guarantee success. Consider these factors:
Example Scenario: You need to travel from Howrah (HWH) to Chennai (MAS) on the 12839 Chennai Mail. Your HWH-MAS ticket is WL15 (GNWL). You check the route and notice Kharagpur (KGP) is a significant junction after Howrah. Using RailTC's Pre-Booking Analysis, you might find that a HWH-MAS ticket boarding at KGP has a current WL of only WL3 (RLWL). If you can easily reach KGP, changing your boarding point could significantly improve your chances.
