Tired of getting the 'wrong' berth? Discover smart strategies to increase your chances of securing your preferred lower, upper, or side berth on Indian Railways in 2026.

For millions of Indian railway travelers, a comfortable journey often hinges on one crucial factor: the right berth. Whether you prefer the accessibility of a lower berth, the privacy of an upper berth, or the unique layout of a side lower, getting your preferred choice can make all the difference. While IRCTC allows you to specify a preference during booking, it's not a guarantee. So, how can you maximize your chances in 2026? RailTC brings you actionable strategies.
Imagine a long overnight journey from Bengaluru (SBC) to Delhi (NDLS). If you're traveling with family or have mobility concerns, a lower berth is often ideal. For solo travelers seeking peace or those who prefer to avoid constant movement in the aisle, an upper berth might be the top choice. The side lower berth, while sometimes seen as cramped, offers a window view and a sense of semi-privacy. Understanding these personal needs is the first step.
Indian Railways offers various berth types across different classes:
During booking on IRCTC, you'll see options like 'Lower', 'Middle', 'Upper', 'Side Lower', 'Side Upper', or 'Any Berth'. While selecting a specific preference signals your choice to the system, the final allocation depends on several factors including availability, quota, and other passenger preferences (especially for senior citizens).
This cannot be stressed enough: the earlier you book, the better your chances of securing your desired berth. Indian Railways opens bookings 120 days in advance (excluding specific special trains). When you book early, the system has more flexibility in allocating berths, increasing the likelihood of matching your preference.
Example: Planning a trip from Mumbai (CSTM) to Howrah (HWH) on the Mumbai Howrah Mail (12809) for Diwali 2026. Booking in August 2026 for a November journey gives you a significantly higher chance of getting a lower berth compared to booking just a month before.
RailTC Tip: Before you book, use RailTC's Pre-Booking Analysis. It helps you identify trains and dates with higher overall confirmation probabilities. A train with high confirmation probability generally has more berth availability, which indirectly improves your odds of getting your preferred berth.
When booking your ticket on IRCTC, carefully choose your berth preference:
Example: For a journey from Chennai (MAS) to Hyderabad (SC), booking in 2A on the Charminar Express (12759) might offer slightly better chances for a preferred berth than 3A, simply because 2A has fewer berths per coach, potentially leading to less competition for specific types.
Even if you didn't get your preferred berth initially, all hope is not lost:
The most proactive way to improve your chances for a preferred berth is to make an informed decision before you even book. RailTC's unique Pre-Booking Analysis allows you to:
