Quick Answer

  • First Chart: Prepared 4 hours before the train's scheduled departure from the Origin station.
  • Second Chart: Prepared 30 minutes before departure (allocating final vacant seats).

What is Chart Preparation?

Chart preparation is the finalization of the passenger list by Indian Railways. Once the chart is prepared, no more tickets can be cancelled or booked through the standard reservation system, and final seat numbers are assigned to RAC and Waitlisted passengers if vacancies exist.

The Two Charts System

Indian Railways actually prepares two charts for every train to maximize seat utilization:

Chart 1 4 Hours Before

The main chart. This is when most waitlisted tickets get confirmed against cancellations.

  • Finalizes GN, PQ, and RL quotas.
  • Assigns berths to RAC.
  • If your ticket is still WL, it might auto-cancel (if e-ticket).

Chart 2 30 Mins Before

The cleanup chart. Fills seats from last-minute cancellations or TTE quotas.

  • Available seats can be booked online/counter.
  • TTEs get the final list of empty berths.

What Happens to Logic of Waitlisted Tickets?

  • Fully Waitlisted E-Tickets: Automatically cancelled after Chart 1. Refund processed to bank.
  • Partially Waitlisted E-Tickets: (e.g., 2 passengers CNF, 2 WL) The WL passengers can still travel, but without a seat.
  • Counter Tickets (PRS): You can travel in the unreserved coach or request the TTE, but you are not legally entitled to a berth.

Status Codes After Chart Prep

Code Meaning Action
CNF Confirmed Enjoy your journey! Seat assigned.
RAC Reservation Against Cancellation You can travel sitting (half berth).
WL Waitlist Ticket cancelled (if e-ticket). Cannot travel.

Common Questions

Q: Can I book tickets after Chart Preparation?

Yes! If seats remain vacant after Chart 1, they are released for booking under "Current Availability" at the station or online.

Q: Does the chart prepare from my boarding station?

Usually, the chart is prepared from the Train's Origin Station 4 hours before departure from there. However, for major remote stations, a separate chart might be prepared closer to the train's arrival.
