As the crisp autumn air heralds the arrival of Diwali and Chhath Puja, millions of Indians begin their annual pilgrimage home. For those traveling to North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, this period represents the single biggest challenge for securing train tickets. The demand far outstrips supply, turning IRCTC booking into a high-stakes race. But with smart planning and the right tools, you can significantly increase your chances of a confirmed journey in 2026.
This guide from RailTC provides actionable strategies to navigate the festive season booking frenzy, ensuring you’re prepared well in advance.
The festive season, particularly Diwali and Chhath Puja, witnesses an unprecedented surge in passenger traffic, especially on routes connecting major metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru to cities and towns in North India. Trains from New Delhi (NDLS), Anand Vihar Terminal (ANVT), Mumbai CST (CSTM), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Howrah (HWH), and Sealdah (SDAH) towards destinations like Patna (PNBE), Muzaffarpur (MFP), Darbhanga (DBG), Gorakhpur (GKP), Varanasi (BSB), and Lucknow (LKO) see waitlists soaring into the hundreds, sometimes even thousands, within minutes of booking opening.
The key challenge is the fixed Advance Reservation Period (ARP) of 120 days. This means tickets for mid-October to mid-November (the typical Diwali/Chhath window) become available in mid-June to mid-July. Missing this crucial window dramatically reduces your chances of confirmation.
Your absolute best bet for a confirmed ticket during Diwali and Chhath Puja is to book precisely 120 days in advance, counting from your date of journey, excluding the day of journey. This is when the booking window opens, typically at 08:00 AM IST for all classes.
When direct trains on your preferred route are fully booked or show low confirmation chances, it's time to think strategically.
Even with advance planning, you might end up with a waitlisted (WL) ticket. Understanding waitlist types and monitoring is key.
If all advance booking attempts fail, Tatkal and Premium Tatkal quotas are your last resort. However, during Diwali and Chhath Puja, competition is incredibly fierce, and securing a ticket is largely dependent on luck and speed.
Even after chart preparation, seats can become available due to cancellations. Chart preparation typically occurs 4 hours before the train's scheduled departure from its originating station (or 2 hours for early morning trains). A second chart is sometimes prepared closer to departure.
Traveling during Diwali and Chhath Puja on Indian Railways demands meticulous planning and a proactive approach. By utilizing the 120-day ARP, exploring strategic routes, wisely navigating waitlists, and leveraging powerful tools like RailTC's Pre-Booking Analysis and PNR Analyzer, you can significantly reduce stress and improve your chances of reaching home for the festivities.
